The purpose of the Advanced Practice Forum is to allow CoBGRTE members to discuss development of advanced practice graduate programs.

  1. I would like to know others thoughts on what would be considered "advanced practice" and how best to get it integrated by our employers. Do you envision this to be a different job description than a therapist that works in the ICU/PICU/NICU, and if so how do you get it started?

  2. I certainly think the market place is the leader for this direction. I've heard several pulmonologist that consider the idea of the RC Advanced Practitioner a great idea for their office. Many of them have a RC to perform PFTs.....could this be incorporated there? Might we get some response from the ACCP group?

  3. Hello, first time poster, long time reader, and recently graduated MSRT. :)

I certainly think that an "advanced practice respiratory therapist" would be more involved in just basic respiratory care. I believe respiratory disease management will start to fit into that description. In the future, it will be up to us to consult with physicians as to how respiratory care treatments and devices interact with the specific disease of the patient.

I believe that as we continue respiratory care research, we'll start to find that some disease conditions that work well and not so well with our respiratory care treatments. In fact, we already have. Take CPT for instance, there's talk of it only be using for cystic fibrosis patients only versus using it on atelectasis or pneumonia patients. Take non-invasive ventilation and its indications and contraindications.

As long as we continue research and continue to discover the growing lists of indications and contraindications for each of these specific diseases, the more the role of an advanced practice respiratory therapist, and therefore graduate RTs, will start to come into fruition.

Convincing these physicians is another story that is really dependent on how much respect the individual advanced practice therapist can be. But that's a whole another issue. ;)

  4. Greetings all--
One of the ideas I've been kicking around that has potential benefits for present RT faculty and soon-to-be graduates is the idea of an "internship" or "externship" to another university. What I envisioned is a "Faculty Matching Program" or a "Graduate Matching Program" where CoBGRTE could assist with matching the special interests faculty/graduates with institutions and faculty within that particular area of expertise. I began looking around the country for something similar for university faculty, but there is none that I can find. Think....matching program for medical school students.

Does anyone see value in this kind of effort or opportunity? I am open to comments, concerns, and questions.

    Thanks for you thoughts--
    Gregg

  5. Going back to Bob's beginning post, David Vines published an ATS abstract on the DACUM findings from the ACCP group used to identify the most valued advanced practice skills chest physicians wanted in RTs.
